Monday Musings Episode 158 | The Story of the old man and joy

Have you ever noticed that when you really really want something, it gets really really hard to obtain? How much time of your life do you spend looking for happiness, love, safety and security, etc in places outside of yourself?

Let me tell you a story …

There was this old man who lived in a village and he was always miserable. He had, had experienced so much misfortune in his life that even his words became bitter. The more he complained, the more toxic he became. Whenever someone spoke to him, all he had to speak about was misfortune. All he had to speak about was his suffering. Slowly people started to avoid him as they felt that his misfortune rubbed on to them. And they felt that if they were in his company then it would spread. The old man was left by himself and he grew even more poisonous in words and with his energy.

On his 80th birthday, nobody wanted to visit him. Then a rumor started spreading through the village after somebody met him that the old man was smiling. He was laughing and looked like he was not complaining anymore. They wondered what was going on. So they went to the old man and sure enough, saw him smiling. They asked the old man, “ What happened?”

What do you think the old man said? Click below to listen to the rest of the story! 🙂
